Subject: Allow Interprovincial Wine Shipping from Canadian Wineries
Dear Hon. Deron Bilous. Minister of Economic Development & Trade,
I am writing to you as someone with a strong interest in, and passion for, Canadian wine. Yet many Canadian wines made across the country are not available to me, due to archaic provincial laws which inhibit me from being able to order wine directly from a winery in another province and have it shipped to my home.
Not only does this place an unwarranted limit on my freedom of personal choice, but it also damages the Canadian economy as a whole. These policies cause considerable harm to rural tourism and to the small, often family-owned businesses that comprise the vast majority of Canadian wineries and grape growers.
It’s time to amend provincial regulations in order to allow us to buy and carry, or use e-commerce to order and ship, reasonable quantities of wine across provincial borders for our own use.
Dear Hon. Roger Melanson. President of Treasury Board & Minister Responsible for Trade Policy,
Dear Hon. Brad Duguid. Minister of Economic Development & Growth,
Dear Hon. J. Heath MacDonald. Minister of Economic Development and Tourism,
Dear Hon. Steven Bonk. Minister of Economy & Minister responsible for Tourism, Innovation, and Trade,
Dear Hon. Ranj Pillai. Minister of Economic Development,
Dear Hon. Paul Quassa,
Subject: Support Growth of Canadian Wineries
Dear Hon. Wally Schumann. Minister of Industry, Tourism, Investment,
As a Canadian wine lover, I applaud the provincial government in its efforts to allow its residents to have wine shipped to them for personal consumption from other Canadian provinces.
I have been disappointed, however, in the lack of reciprocity by other provinces to do the same, and allow their residents to buy Canadian wine from other provinces without penalty. I strongly feel that all Canadians should have the ability to have wine from outside of their province of residence shipped directly to them, without impediment, as I do. This would provide them freedom of personal choice, and allow them to develop their knowledge and appreciation of our fine Canadian wines. Currently, as you know, only British Columbia, Manitoba and Nova Scotia have provided their residents such a right. The ability to order and ship your favorite Canadian products directly should not be limited to 19% of Canadians.
For this reason, I am writing to you to encourage you to ensure this issue is progressed. I understand that although wine did not feature in the Canada Free Trade Agreement (2017), that a Federal-Provincial Alcohol Working Group was formed. As my representative, I request that you ensure this issue moves forward during discussions undertaken by this working group and through any other appropriate channels.
Let’s make sure all Canadians have unimpeded access to the great wines this country produces.
Dear Hon. Bruce Ralston. Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology,
Dear Hon. Blaine Pederson. Minister of Growth, Enterprise and Trade,
Dear Hon. Geoff MacLellan. Minister of Trade,
